Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when numerous of them drifted across the country's airspace.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend floated over the capital region, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and present no risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have led European authorities to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
