Paceman Atkinson Adds to England's Injury Concerns.

'Serious blow' for England after Atkinson leaves the field suffering a hamstring problem.

The pace bowler further complicated the injury concerns plaguing England upon exiting the ground on the second morning in the Melbourne Test against Australia.

Atkinson felt a problem in his left leg immediately following a delivery in his spell at the MCG.

Team management reported the 27-year-old felt some "soreness" and was to take time on the sidelines for further assessment "over the next few hours".

The final Test in this Ashes battle beginning on 4 January starts on Sunday, 4 January.

England have previously lost fast bowlers Mark Wood with a knee problem and another paceman with an abdominal strain during this series.

A replacement bowler was called up as cover for Wood.

Atkinson struggled in the opening two Tests, managing only a handful of scalps.

He was dropped from the previous Test, before being recalled for the Boxing Day match in the playing XI.

Surrey's Atkinson performed better in the fourth Test, claiming a couple of wickets with the ball, before adding 28 as a batsman being one of only three teammates to get into double digits.

After bowling one over at the end of day one, he returned on Saturday morning and removed Scott Boland edging to the keeper.

Yet, towards the conclusion of his spell, he delivered a slower ball to the batsman and suddenly grabbed for his hamstring.

Gus Atkinson returned to the side for the Melbourne match following his omission of the third.
