The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Chose the Incorrect Critical Role Track

This latest animated series, the newest animated adventure from the beloved role-playing group, revealed a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and making their mark, while teasing at several heart-wrenching backstories for characters such as Liam O'Brien's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, Fjord.

Overall, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.

The intro employs "Welcome to Wildemount", an exceptional composition composed by artist the talented musician. This piece originating from the official score of the same name, the second one put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's record label their music brand. It's a great nostalgic choice, and I believe that fans of the second campaign will love its inclusion.

But for me, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and energy that was part of the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", written by musician Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was first revealed in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel wrote words to the tune for the series' animated intro in 2018.

Featuring vocals from one actress, another performer, a co-star, as well as Riegel himself, the track was memorable and enjoyable. At the time, I hadn't even watched the second campaign yet, but this was such an earworm that I kept it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you dive into an installment of adventurous fun.

The Mighty Nein's intro with "the new song" fails to hit the right notes for me. It's an impressive composition, but from what I know of the group, I feel that its mood is a little off.

Naturally, Critical Role has stated that the animated show will have a few changes and variations from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be one of them.

The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. For those eager until then, or wish to prepare to get to know the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on Spotify and the video site.
