Vince Gilligan Shares He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.

The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would emerge as a cultural phenomenon. “The viewers have been incredible,” Gilligan says. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”

With the first season of the hit series coming to an end—and Season 2 officially in the works—the writers' room recently discussed the audience reaction and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.

Regarding the Tremendous Viewer Reception

It would be easy to get swayed by the constant speculation and online debates surrounding Pluribus. Gilligan, however, is doing his best to avoid both.

“The experience is akin to force fed hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I learn of it anecdotally, and that's by design. Not once have I Googled myself, nor do I ever plan to. Not because I don't care. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd be stuck in my living room.”

In spite of his concerted efforts, there’s no way to avoid the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The most practical strategy is to accept it graciously and try not to let it dictate the story of the show.

“It is not our goal to adjust our writing,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The narrative we craft is not impacted by online forums.”

“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” Gilligan adds.

The Central Mystery: Has the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?

Considering the creative staff aren't taking cues by public opinion, does that mean they have already decided how Pluribus will ultimately end? The answer is yes… sort of.

“There are some potential directions about the ultimate destination,” Gilligan says. “however, we remain prepared to throw out a decent plan for a better idea. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I imagine we will be doing that.”

On the other hand, if all else fails, director and writer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to use as a backup.

“My recurring proposal is that everything takes place within a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith quips, “but no one is buying it.”

Of course, one could always use the iconic TV endings?

“My dream is Carol to open her eyes next to Bob Newhart,” he jokes.

Pluribus is streaming now on Apple TV+.
