Why Real Madrid Possess 'Complete Confidence' in Youngster Thiago Pitarch
When an 18-year-old makes Real Madrid history in a crucial Champions League tie against City, it naturally attracts praise and the spotlight.
In only his first start in the competition - and fifth game for the team - the young midfielder made a strong impression as the 15-time Champions League winners claimed a 3-0 last-16 first leg advantage at the Bernabeu.
The teenager, who also made his Real debut in the play-off round a few weeks prior with a substitute appearance at Sporting Lisbon, then helped Los Blancos defeat the English Premier League side in Tuesday's return to secure a last eight place.
Aged 18 years old, Pitarch was the club's most youthful starter to start twice in the Champions League knockout stages, surpassing star Vinicius Jr's record by a week and a half.
Rapid Ascent From The Academy
This talent is the most recent to come through from the club's academy and is rapidly cementing himself as one of the manager's most promising protegees.
He joined Madrid from CD Leganes in the summer of 2023, having formerly spent time at Atletico and Getafe academies, and starting out for the under-19 side, where he rapidly created a strong impression.
Pitarch progressed to the reserve side and it was during a friendly match in which they faced the senior squad, then managed by Arbeloa, where the teenager is said to have drawn the eye of the present manager, who took over from the previous coach in January.
Reports would later describe the moment as "love at first sight," noting he excelled not only for his skill on the ball, but for the vitality, character and drive he brought to the team.
'His Greatest Quality Is His Character'
In the summer of 2025, former boss Xabi Alonso invited Pitarch to train with the senior squad and gave him minutes in pre-season.
Yet, it was the change in manager that became the defining moment in his career as he was introduced as a second-half replacement in both ties against Benfica that led to the meeting with Pep Guardiola's team.
"I've dreamed of this each night when sleeping, the very first time I began playing the game, each day you head to training and every day you have a game," stated the player after his first appearance.
"I have just fulfilled my ambition with the greatest club in the world and in the top tournament."
Given a starting debut in the Spanish league against his former club - where he was for four years after moving from Atleti in 2018 - he has kept his place for the next four as injuries to Bellingham and Dani Ceballos created an opportunity.
The teenager has seized it with displays that have belied his age and inexperience.
"He's a extremely fast footballer, and you can see his capabilities," said Arbeloa. "He is extremely dynamic, with great stamina, work-rate and mobility."
The player's mindset has also stood out to his manager.
"His greatest quality is his character," continued Arbeloa. "He always wants the ball, and even under pressure, he remains unfazed.
"I understand people are surprised to see him make his debut in a European fixture, but he's playing because I had total trust in him to do what he usually does.
"Thiago will continue to get chances with the first team. It's a pleasure to coach a player like him."
A Future International Decision
Pitarch was born in a Madrid suburb, in the Spanish capital's community, and was raised deeply involved in Spanish football, moving through youth setups before entering the club's famous youth academy.
He holds dual Spanish and Moroccan citizenship, giving him the option to play for both nations at the highest level.
Under Fifa eligibility rules, footballers may appear for different countries at youth level without being locked in, with the ultimate choice only final once they play in a competitive senior international match.
He has played for the Spanish national team at underage levels, turning out for both the under-19 and under-20 teams, and took part in the 2025 Fifa Under-20 World Cup, where Spain made it to the last eight.
Despite this, he has yet to commit to either full national side, who are watching his progress with interest.
Speaking recently, Pitarch said: "I haven't made my final decision so far. My situation is great with the Spanish federation, but I'll make a decision in the near future."
His situation echoes that of other bi-national players such as club colleague Diaz and Barca star Yamal. Whereas 18-year-old Yamal opted for La Roja, Diaz decided to represent the Atlas Lions.
Eyes on the Prize
At present, his attention is on making his mark in the Real side and repaying Arbeloa's faith.
He featured for 74 minutes in the two-one victory at City, which completed a five-one overall triumph and a last-eight matchup with Bayern Munich.
His substitution by fellow youth graduate in Angel underscored Arbeloa's trust in the next generation to help the team chase future success.
After his impressive impact so far on European football's biggest stage, Pitarch is expected to be a central figure in that.
"Arbeloa handles me the identical way. We deal with it very naturally. I try not to think about it too much - I must deserve my minutes on the field," he said after the win at Etihad Stadium.
